There has been considerable interest of recent times in improving the built environment of our schools, both public and private, in recognition of the realisation that our children are our future. In addition, universities attract significant revenue via local and overseas students fees and students are highly discerning in their assessment of the various institutions available to them. Further, the nature of education itself and the technical advancements affecting teaching and learning methodologies has required schools to keep up with the times.
Haskell Architects has been heavily involved in the education sector, through the provision of IT pods as part of the State government 2002 program to increase access to, and the availability of, ICT in schools and, currently, through its involvement in substantial and ongoing building projects for a number of both private and public primary and secondary schools. Each educational facility has its own priorities and objectives and projects require careful thought and planning. Design and planning solutions must allow for flexible and long-term goals and support a variety of ever-changing teaching and learning methods and outcomes. Haskell Architects has therefore been very active in master-planning as well as the design and delivery of school projects.

Newcomb Secondary College - Redevelopment
Client: Department of Education and Training Project Budget: $7,000,000 Status: Current
Haskell Architects are the principal consultants involved in Stage 1 & 2 redevelopment of Newcomb Secondary. The project has entailed assessing the existing conditions of the school and realising the financial potential for a joint-use agreement for provision of a new car park. Traffic management and access solutions to encourage student drop off and away from busy Bellarine Highway have been developed. The pedestrian and traffic access solutions have influenced the subsequent functional relationships such as the location of the Learning Resource Centre and Administration areas. The challenge for Stage 1 works will be to create a fresh image and visual statement to the East Geelong community to express change and the new progressive approach taken at Newcomb Secondary College.

Department of Education and Training IT PODS
Client: DE&T Budget: $4,000,000 over 40 schools Status: Completed 2003
Two years ago the Victorian Government initiative to improve access to ICT within government secondary schools was announced. Haskell Architects worked closely with the Department of Education and many schools around Victoria to integrate these PODS. As the pods do not have a class teacher within the space, careful design for supervision, safety and security within spaces was paramount.
